Sing Around Nebraska

Please join me in congratulating the following students who participated in the Tenth Biannual Sing Around Nebraska Choral Festival Saturday, February 6, 2010. The students are: Emma Davis, Madison DeRiese, Corrinne Douglas, Liam Downes, Allyson Fricke and Aubrey Winkler.

For the past three weeks these students, with the support of their parents (bringing early 7:30 a.m. or picking up late 3:45) have worked with me learning the music and expectations for the Festival. These six Hill students were part of the Lincoln site of 163 singers, and a larger group of 1175 singers from twelve sites across the State of Nebraska.

The day of the Festival students arrived at 8:30 and began rehearsals with Guest Clinician Mr. Tom Michalek. Rehearsal lasted throughout the day with the concert presentation at 4:00. The selection of songs challenged students to sing in a variety of tempos, multiple parts and in Latin and French. Songs included: “Festival Sanctus” – Leavitt, “Art Thou Troubled” – Handel, edited Bartle, “J’entends Le Moulin” – arr. Crocker, “Old Joe Clark” – Herrington/Glick, “Ja-Da” – Carleton, arr. Speaker-Avery and “Inscription of Hope” – Stroope.

The day was a delight seeing our singers’ blossom and grow through this musical experience. Mr. Michalek e-mailed the directors the following day with these final thoughts – “I was exhausted after the day, but had trouble sleeping last night because I had so much fun all day. Your students were so well prepared and "into it" all day. The great work you all do is apparent.” I know I was proud of all the hard work and the positive manner in which these students represented the Hill Community. I’m looking forward to taking more singers to the Eleventh Biannual Sing Around Nebraska Festival in 2012!

Fondly,

Mrs. Karen Shelton
